Boat en route to Spain breaks down, killing 27 people

No fewer than 27 people have died after the engine on their boat failed, leaving them stranded off the coast of Mauritania between Nouadhibou, Mauritania, and Dakhla, Western Sahara.

The passengers were trying to migrate to Spain’s Canary Islands. When the boat broke down, they began to suffer from extreme dehydration, according to a statement from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The Mauritanian coastguard rescued a single survivor, a Guinean, near Nouadhibou.
