Afghanistan-Kazakhstan air corridors to increase exports
After the successful introduction of two air corridors between Afghanistan and the Indian cities of New Delhi and Mumbai, the government is now opening another air cargo corridor, this time with Almaty, the capital of Kazakhstan.
The opening of the air corridor is expected to lead to the export of over 10 tons of goods to Almaty on a weekly basis, as the two countries try to boost their economic and trade relations.
In addition to fresh and dried fruits, vegetables and handicrafts, Afghan carpets will also be exported to Kazakhstan via the air corridor, said the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI). ACCI officials also said that during the summer the volume of fresh fruit exports will be doubled to Kazakhstan.
Afghanistan is also aiming to establish air cargo relations with Azerbaijan, Singapore, Indonesia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
“It is hoped that [the] Kabul-Dubai and Kabul-Jakarta corridors become operational [soon], we hope that our exports to other countries in the world increase significantly in the next few years,” said Mir Zaman Popal, head of ACCI.
Since the launch of the air cargo corridor between Afghanistan and New Delhi six months ago, fresh produce, dried fruit and medicinal plants to the value of 20 million USD have been exported to India.
The opening of air corridors with other countries has been welcomed by the Afghan business community as such cargo corridors will increase the trade volume between Afghanistan and these countries.
