Athletes compete in Afghan winter games

An Afghan winter games festival kicked off on 23 February in central Bamyan province, with more than 160 athletes, both men and women, participating in the games.

Provincial officials in Bamyan said most of the participants came from six nearby provinces, including Maidan Wardak, Kabul, Parwan, Bamyan, Ghazni and Panjshir.

In the men’s skiing competition, Nasrullah Esmati won first prize, while Mohammad Ali Orfan and Boman Ali secured second and third places.
Fatima Nazari, Rehana Mohammadi and Zakia Mohammad won first, second and third prizes respectively in the women’s skiing competition.

In response to a question posed by The Migrant Project, medal-winner Fatima Nazari said: “Winter games are not very well known among Afghan athletes. Launching such festivals can help attract tourists to Bamyan, which results in boosting the economy of the families here.”

Winter games have been organized in Bamyan province for several years and take place in Band-e-Amir, Afghanistan’s first national park.
Zakia Mohammad, who won third place in the women’s skiing competition shared a message with Afghanistan’s youth.

“Afghanistan has a very young population. This young population is key to ensure progress in every aspect in Afghanistan. I would like to urge the young generation to remain in their home country and take part in the development of Afghanistan.”
