Italy has signed a 2.5 million Euro agreement with the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to benefit young people and vulnerable women in Ethiopia.

“Creating job opportunities in migration prone areas is a fundamental step to tackle the root causes of irregular migration,” Italian Ambassador to Ethiopia Giuseppe Mistretta said.

The ambassador added that the project will help to keep vulnerable young people safe by providing them with reasons to stay in the region.

The project is expected to create jobs in the textile industry and will be implemented by UNIDO over three years targeting Tigray province and Addis Ababa.

According to the project plan, Eritrean migrants living in refugee camps in Ethiopia will also benefit from the fund. Ambassador Mistretta pledged an additional one million Euros to create job opportunities for Eritrean migrants in Ethiopia.
