The local government in Tigray province has selected 10,000 young people for jobs at the newly inaugurated Mekelle Industrial Park, located in the northern part of Ethiopia. Those selected all live in Tigray province and have completed secondary schooling.
The industrial park will mainly house textile and clothing manufacturing businesses. According to the regional “Small and Medium Manufacturing Industries Development Agency”, the young people who have been selected will be offered training in tailoring and design as well as how to operate the machines before starting their jobs.
The Head of the industrial park, Goitom Gebrekidan, said that seven out of the 15 buildings that have been constructed during the first phase of the project have been transferred to the foreign investors, most of whom are Bangladeshi textile companies.
The companies are expected to begin manufacturing within nine months after installing the equipment in their factories.
Officially inaugurated last July by the prime minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, the industrial park is expected to hire an additional 10,000 employees in the industry once the second phase of construction is completed, including refugees in Ethiopia.
