Afghanistan-Uzbekistan relationship deepens with signing of cooperation agreements

President Ashraf Ghani and his Uzbek counterpart, Shaat Mirziyoyev, signed a cooperation agreement in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, on 5 December.

More than 20 agreements were signed between the two leaders on issues such as cooperation on economic, security, health, electricity, agriculture and higher education matters Tolo News reports.

A joint press conference was held after the signing of the agreement, where President Mirziyoyev voiced his country’s strong support for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

“Tashkent strongly values cooperation with Afghanistan in all spheres, including economic and security ties. Cooperation agreements signed between the two nations are worth millions of dollars,” he said.

A joint commission will be assigned to oversee the implementation of the cooperation agreements between the two countries. A new Uzbek consulate office will also be opened soon in Afghanistan.

President Ghani thanked the Uzbek President for his support to peace and stability in Afghanistan and added that the Uzbek leader has laid the foundation for an agenda for regional cooperation.

“The government and people of Afghanistan want Uzbekistan as a trading partner, which would be for the benefit of both countries,” Ghani concluded.

It is hoped that the cooperation agreements will help to promote economic growth in Afghanistan and create job opportunities, boosting social and economic stability in the country.
