Tunisia’s navy has found the bodies of 26 migrants at sea a week after their boat collided with a navy vessel, bringing the death toll to 34, the Tunisian defense ministry has announced.
The collision occurred on 8 October, 54 km off the Tunisian coast, when a Tunisian naval ship collided with a wooden boat carrying an estimated 80 migrants heading to Europe.
The collision is reported to have happened when the navy ship approached the boat to identify who was on board.
Maltese authorities coordinated a rescue operation with the assistance of the Italian and Tunisian navies rescuing 38 migrants and reporting 8 dead at the time.
A week after the collision a Tunisian search and rescue vessel spotted the remains of the migrant boat and recovered a further 26 bodies over a two-day period.
One of the migrants rescued after the tragedy told AFP that 90 people had been on board, meaning up to two dozen migrants are feared dead and missing at sea.
