List of 33,000 deceased migrants published in German newspaper

A German newspaper has published a list of 33,293 people who have died trying to reach Europe to highlight the deadly journey. .
The list was created by Banu Cennetoğlu, a well-known Turkish artist, and includes the name, age, gender, nationality and cause of death for every migrant who lost their life en route to Europe between 1993 and June 2017.
Through the creation of the list, newspaper Der Tagesspiegel said it hoped to go beyond the statistics and show the world the human face of the migrant crisis.
The feature was compiled with the assistance of more than 500 groups and individuals and is still just “the tip of the iceberg,” Cennetoglu told the paper.
Last year was the deadliest yet for migrants crossing the Mediterranean. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports that over 5,000 migrants have either died or gone missing on their way to Europe.
According to a statement by the Afghan Minister for Refugees and Repatriation, Alami Balkhi, published on Ariana TV, Afghan nationals currently make up around 12% of all irregular migrants, many of whom try to make it to Europe.
