Remains of 21-year-old Nigerian migrant woman discovered in Alps
According to a May report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the body of a Nigerian migrant was discovered on 6 May in the Durance river on the dangerous Alpine route between France and Italy.
The 21-year-old woman was the second body recovered from the area during the month of May, with another migrant having been found dead in Montgenèvre, also on the route from Italy to France.
A young Moroccan man was reported to have “drowned in the Kolpa River, on 21 May on the border between Croatia and Slovenia, making it the seventh drowning recorded in the river since the beginning of 2018,” the IOM report stated.
The report addresses several other cases of migrants dying while traveling to destinations in Europe, including a 22 May incident in Turkey in which an Afghan migrant perished as a result of a vehicle accident in Bayramli, Van Province, near the border with Greece. According to the report, “Approximately 70 other people were also traveling in the back of the truck and survived.”
The IOM’s Missing Migrants Project has recorded that 1,134 people died or went missing while migrating so far in 2018, including 635 who died while crossing the Mediterranean. According to the authors there have been several other additions to the Missing Migrants Project database since the last update.
