Turkish authorities rescue 70 irregular migrants suffocating inside minivan
Turkish authorities say they have rescued and detained 70 irregular migrants in the eastern province of Van on Sunday, 4 October 2020. Two others in the van were found dead upon arrival.
The detained irregular migrants include 37 Pakistanis, 33 Afghans and two Iraqis.
Three human smuggling suspects have been placed in police custody while investigations are underway.
Turkey has been a key transit point for irregular migrants from Asia, the Middle East and parts of Africa wishing to cross over Europe to start new lives.
