Authorities continue to stop irregular migrant crossing of the English Channel
The UK authorities have intercepted 17 migrants after they crossed the English Channel on 28 January, while another 78 people were equally intercepted by the French counterparts on the same day trying to cross the Channel on four boats.
UK immigration minister Chris Philp said “our intelligence sharing with our French counterparts through the new operations centre helped place maritime and beach patrols in the right place at the right time, preventing more than 130 people from making it to the UK.”
Chris Philp further vows to “undertake substantial steps to tackle the unacceptable problem of illegal migration.”
The migrant crossings peaked last year, at least 8,400 people reached the UK shores, compared with less than 2,000 in 2019.
