Greece intends to send 1.450 migrants back to Turkey

Greece plans to deport 1,450 migrants whose asylum applications were rejected and are currently at migrant reception centres on Lesbos and other Aegean islands to Turkey.

To ease the process, Greece had submitted the request to the European Commission and EU border agency Frontex and asked Turkey to respect the 2016 EU-Turkey agreement to return the migrants.

“We expect Turkey to step up its efforts … First, to prevent the passage of boats departing from its shores bound for our country and European Union. And second to accept the return of migrants,” the Greek Migration Minister for Migration and Asylum, Notis Mitarachi said on 14 January.

Migrants return to Turkey largely decreased last year as Covid-19 related restrictions were in place between the two countries.
