UN solicits financial aid to assist Europe-bound African refugees
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)has called for financial assistance to the tune of $100 million to enable it to assist African refugees, who in a bid to escape crisis and conflicts in their home countries, embark on dangerous routes to reach Europe.
The Agency lamented the growing number of refugees from Africa generally, which it noted was forcing more Africans to risk their lives attempting to reach Europe through the Mediterranean Sea crossing.
It noted that last year alone, no fewer than 1,064 deaths occurred along the central and western crossing routes.
