UK and France “crack down” on smuggling gangs as migrant crossings rise

The UK and French authorities have agreed to establish a “joint intelligence cell to crack down on gangs” who organise irregular migrant crossings through the English Channel.

The agreement came after the Home Secretary Priti Patel met the new French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin on 12 July to boost efforts to curb the influx of migrants.

On the same day, UK officials recorded 180 crossings while another 200 migrants were intercepted by the French authorities which is the highest number of crossings in one day.
