Turkey intercepts 545 migrants in 10 days
In the first 10 days of July, the Turkish Coast Guard has intercepted 545 migrants and asylum seekers on rubber boats and ships in the Aegean Sea, according to data provided by Turkey’s state-run news agency.
A major operation happened on 7 July when 276 irregular migrants were found in an air-tight compartment on a boat near the Aegean coastal city of Izmir. Five further operations were carried out.
The rescued migrants and asylum seekers, including many children and women, are from different nationalities and were transferred to the immigration authorities.
