Germany is no longer the top European destination for asylum seekers
Spain has overtaken Germany as the European country receiving most asylum seekers, a report by EU’s asylum agency EASO shows.
Germany received 33,714 asylum applications from January to April 2020, whereas Spain received 37.471. France and Greece followed Spain as the next most common destination countries.
Overall, asylum applications across Europe in the first quarter of 2020 have decreased by 43 per cent compared to the same period last year. The drop is likely a result of the border closures and lockdown which were enforced in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
