Libya: Twenty-two bodies found off the coast of Zwara

The bodies of 22 migrants were found off the coast of Zwara in Libya on 23 August, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The victims are suspected to have been aboard the boat that sank last week. The shipwreck is believed to be the deadliest shipwreck off the coast of Libya this year, reportedly claiming about 45 lives, including five children.

One of the survivors reportedly said: “I can’t believe what happened to us. We drowned and there was fire everywhere. Nobody came.”

Almost 500 deaths have been recorded on this route so far this year, according to the IOM’s Missing Migrants project.
