Mediterranean arrivals to Europe in 2020 surpasses 2019

More migrants have entered Europe by sea this year compared to last year, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). A total of 16,724 migrants and refugees arrived by sea between 1 January and 22 April 2020, a 16 per cent increase from the 14,381 in arrivals in the same period last year.

Almost half of the migrants (7,357) arrived in Greece via the Eastern Mediterranean route, which has become the busiest route this year. Italy recorded 3,310 arrivals while Malta recorded 1,201 arrivals via the Central Mediterranean route. About 4,856 arrivals were recorded in Spain via the Western Mediterranean route.

About 256 deaths have been recorded on the three main Mediterranean sea routes in the period under review, compared with 425 deaths in the same period in 2019.
